Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Sunday cleared the first hurdle towards taking part in next year's presidential election http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/ , even though the central election commission has previously ruled him ineligible to run.

Navalny, 41, is a fierce opponent of President Vladimir Putin, who is widely expected to win re-election in March, extending 17 years in power.

A veteran campaigner against corruption among Russia's elite http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/Colts-Tarell-Basham-Jersey/ , he won the initial support of 742 people at a gathering in a district of Moscow - above the minimum 500 required to initiate a presidential bid.

"There is no large-scale support for Putin and his rule in this country," Navalny told the meeting, describing himself as a "real candidate" for election and threatening a boycott of the vote by his supporters if he is barred from running.

On Sunday evening, Navalny submitted the documents to the central election commission needed to be registered as a candidate.

The commission, which extended its working hours on Sunday to take the documents http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/Colts-Ty-Hilton-Jersey/ , has five days in which to decide whether Navalny will be registered.

The commission has previously said he is ineligible due to a suspended prison sentence that he says was politically motivated.

"We are capable of opposing the current authorities. Our key demand is to be allowed to take part in the elections," Navalny told reporters as he was leaving the election commission building in the central Moscow.

Navalny has been jailed three times this year on charges of repeatedly organizing public meetings and rallies in violation of existing laws.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled in October that Navalny's conviction for fraud in 2014 was "arbitrary" and ordered Moscow to pay him compensation.

The ruling party United Russia meeting on Saturday pledged "all possible support" to the 65-year-old Putin in his bid to win a further six years in power in the March election.

The Communist Party, which came second after United Russia in a parliamentary election last year, named Pavel Grudinin, 57 http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/Colts-Tj-Green-Jersey/ , as its candidate, dropping veteran party leader Gennady Zyuganov.

Another politician who has run before, Sergei Mironov from A Just Russia party, said his party had decided to support Putin instead and not propose its own candidate.

Property developer Sergei Polonsky, who has been convicted of defrauding investors http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/Colts-Scott-Tolzien-Jersey/ , also secured enough initial backing to seek clearance from the election commission to take part in the presidential race.

Others planning to run include television personality Ksenia Sobchak, whose late father was Putin's boss in the early 1990s, journalist Ekaterina Gordon.

A South African appeals court increased Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius' sentence for murdering his girlfriend to 13 years and five months on Friday, marking a victory for prosecutors in a case that shocked the world.

The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein more than doubled his original sentence of six years after the state argued that it was unduly lenient.

Pistorius, 31 http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/Colts-Ryan-Kelly-Jersey/ , was not in court for the hearing.

South African court doubles Pistorius sentence to more than 13 years

Prosecutors argued earlier this month that Oscar Pistorius failed to show genuine remorse after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

"One of the essential ingredients of a balanced sentence is that it must reflect the seriousness of the offence," Andrea Johnson, of the National Prosecution Authority, had told the court.

Pistorius' lawyer Barry Roux mounted a strong defence of the judge who handed down the six-year sentence, saying she took into account his claim that he believed he was shooting an intruder.

The Paralympic athlete shot dead Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013 when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom toilet.

He pleaded not guilty at his trial in 2014 and has always denied that he killed Steenkamp in a rage http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/Colts-Rigoberto-Sanchez-Jersey/ , saying he mistook her for a burglar.

In 2015, Pistorius was found guilty of murder and given less than half of the minimum 15 years in jail for that crime.

Pistorius was originally convicted of culpable homicide - the equivalent of manslaughter - but the appeal court upgraded his conviction.

'JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED'

Nazreen Shaik Peremanov, a constitutional law expert at the University of South Africa's law school, told AFP that Pistorius could now appeal the latest sentence at the country's highest court - the Constitutional Court.

"They were forced to impose that sentence, and the court found there were no substantial and compelling circumstances and thus handed down (that) period of imprisonment http://www.coltsrookiestore.com/Colts-Reggie-Wayne-Jersey/ ," said legal analyst Ulrich Roux. "(Recent) sentences have been much more harsh than in the past, in my opinion."

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku said he was pleased with the Supreme Court's ruling.

"We always maintained as an institution that this appeal is not about an individual. It has got everything to do with the proper administration of justice," he said.

"We hope the family will find closure knowing that justice has been served and the proper sentence has been handed out."

Oscar's brother Carl Pistorius tweeted that he was "Shattered. Heartbroken. Gutted" following the court's ruling.

"We have all suffered incomprehensible loss. The death of Reeva was and still is a great loss for our family too," he wrote.

Previously an ambassador for disabled people worldwide, Pistorius was released from jail in 2015 after serving one year of the initial five-year term for culpable homicide.

He returned behind bars after his conviction for murder.
